911 is an emergency external for restarting or shutting down a Hermes BBS remotely. When 911 restarts or shuts down the system, it does not give any applications the opportunity to save currently open files. The system will unceremoniously stop. I've run 911 on my system quite a few times and have never had any data damaged. I still, however, recommend that 911 be used only for emergencies.
911 is an external that you will not need to use often, but when you do need it, it can be very useful. I run a multiline BBS, and sometimes one line will get tied-up from a failed FidoNet crashmail call or will somehow lose contact with the modem. When this happens, I can call in on the second line and tell the system to restart as soon as all users log off or restart immediately.
911 can also be used to completely shut down the Macintosh. Depending on which Mac you have, the system will either completely power down or will display a window with a restart button.
Using 911 is pretty self-explanatory. The menus will explain everything you need to know. 911 will not do anything until all nodes are inactive. The exception to that is the exclamation point (!). If you select Shutdown or Restart, and then press !, 911 will activate immediately regardless of any users online.
911 is freeware, but I'd love to hear from anyone using 911. Send email to:
